In today's economic climate many of us are looking for a way to gain financial security. Unfortunately, the desire and need for more money can be manipulated by those who want to enrich their own pockets at our expense.
A Piece of the Pie?
You have probably seen advertisements that promise you information on how to receive free grant money from the government. These have become more prevalent with the worsening economic situation. They are also capitalizing on the economic recovery or "stimulus" package. These people would have you believe that they can show you how to get your piece of the pie.
The Truth
First of all, the people offering to sell you this information want you to believe that the government has money ready to give just for the asking if you know how and that they can tell you how ... for a fee. This is not true. Almost all federal grant money goes to federal, state, and local agencies to support their programs.
Help May be Available
There is, however, some government assistance available to certain people in certain circumstances. The good news is that you don't need to pay anyone to find out if you are eligible and how to apply for it. The United States Government runs a Web site called
GOVBenefits.gov with information on over 1,000 benefit and assistance programs. If you click on the "start here" button you can take a fairly long survey to find the programs for which you may qualify.
Don't be Fooled
Don't be fooled by the advertisements that promise you inside information for a small fee. Be aware that since this article is about government grants it will trigger sponsored ads making just the kinds of offers I'm warning you about. The government Web sites give you all the information you need and it is totally free.
